Microscope to Telescope
Presenter: Professor David Malin
This talk is a personal, profusely-illustrated history of an unexpected career in professional astronomy. The presentation will explore the challenges and opportunities that the newly commissioned Anglo-Australian Telescope offered in 1975 and how a previous life as a chemical microscopist provided a useful and relevant education. David will outline the evolution of an integrated system of scientific photography that produced a series of intriguing astronomical discoveries. In 1978, this same set of ideas also led to an additive, RGB system of three-color photography which is now universally used to make colour astrononomical images with digital detectors.
Date: Sunday, 6 September 2009
