Members and guests are invited to the June 2007 General Meeting

Holography

Associate Professor Philip Wilksch
School of Applied Sciences
RMIT University

Philip Wilksch is Associate Professor in Applied Optics in the Physics group of the School of Applied Sciences at RMIT. His general area of expertise is in the application of optical principles and techniques to measuring, sensing and control tasks. One of his particular interests is in holography, which he has been teaching and practising at RMIT since 1985. He has developed a course in holography for students of the Physics degree, and maintains a holographic laboratory in the Department.

Prof Wilksch has worked with and provided advice on holography to a number of workers in the advertising, art, craft, photographic and scientific fields. He collaborates closely with Paula Dawson, the renowned Australian holographic artist; he was instrumental in the creation of the first magazine-cover hologram to be produced entirely in Australia; and he has recently led a project which resulted in the world’s first hologram to be recorded with the original daguerreotype technique.

His talk will outline the basics of holography, the current state of the art, and its future prospects. Holograms will be on display in the laboratory.
